Friends Volunteers Strengthen Myakka River State Park Through Native Plant Restoration and Resource Management Excellence

The Friends of Myakka River Citizen Support Organization is proud to recognize a dedicated group of volunteers whose sustained efforts have become a vital part of resource management, habitat restoration, and visitor experience improvements at Myakka River State Park. Contributing more than 1,000 documented volunteer hours over multiple years, this group brings together diverse skills in horticulture, carpentry, interpretation, and project coordination. They regularly support high-priority park needs, volunteering on a weekly to monthly basis depending on seasonal demand.

Native Plant Restoration and Habitat Recovery

A cornerstone of their work has been native plant restoration and ecological recovery throughout the park. The group supported early native plant installations at the Upper Myakka Lake restoration area in 2022, assisting with planting, watering, and maintaining restoration infrastructure. Building on this foundation, they continued restoration efforts in May and October of 2025 with additional native plantings at the lower Myakka River and the re-establishment of vegetation recovery areas at Upper Myakka Lake.

In January of 2026, they further expanded their impact by assisting with additional native plantings near the Down’s Dam site, supporting ongoing riverine and wetland restoration efforts. Following Hurricane Ian, the group also contributed significantly to the rebuilding of Myakka’s native plant nursery, helping restore propagation capacity through infrastructure repair, irrigation planning, and native seed collection. These efforts have strengthened the park’s ability to grow and supply native plants for continued restoration across multiple impacted areas.
