Friends of Myakka River

With over 37,000 acres of stunning protected Wild Florida landscapes, waterscapes, flora and fauna, Myakka River State Park, one of Florida’s largest and oldest State Parks, is a beloved local gem which serves as critical habitat for many state threatened plant and wildlife species.

As a Citizen Support Organization, Friends of Myakka River, founded in 1993 by Dr. Mary Jelks, partners with park management to conserve the park’s delicate ecosystems and support park infrastructure by funding capital projects, as well as important resource management goals.

And by sharing Myakka’s Magic through in-person programming, social media and press, we’re augmenting the park's environmental education and outreach impact, allowing more individuals to personally experience Myakka and understand the importance of ongoing conservation efforts.

Together, we’re helping protect this special and environmentally critical place to the benefit of future generations, and our own

Recent Results in support of Myakka River State Park and the Wild and Scenic Myakka River:

  • We covered the costs of bringing nearly 500 students from Title 1 schools to The Park for an impactful nature connection program in the 2023-24 school year. See HERE.
  • We raised funds to improve wayfinding in Myakka’s backcountry, a large-scale project we'll be taking on in 2024 with the support of our new volunteer member workforces. See HERE.
  • We bolstered capacity with a full-time Executive Director, who is growing our fundraising capabilities, while substantially augmenting the park's impact, in support of their conservation mission, and ours. See HERE.
